Artist’s Statement

My inspiration to paint begins at dawn, watching the sun rising over the ridge on the east side of Skaneateles Lake, or over the small body of water behind our Florida residence.  It is a unique time of day where I can witness a full gamut of light, from bright rays of sunshine to mists that veil parts of the far shoreline as well as the mystery of what will be illuminated over the course of the next half hour.

The past couple of years I find that I am intrigued by clouds. I have painted many beach scenes on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and the clouds play a major role in these paintings by affecting the light in fascinating ways.  The most obvious place to observe this is while the sun is rising or setting.

I find myself able to express my interpretation of Nature’s beauty with watercolor.  I want to paint what I see, but add to that a mood that is compelling, expressive, and provocative.  I delight in strong color, strong shadows, and detail only where it is needed to create a work of art that you share with me.

Why Watercolors:  I did all my course work in oils and printmaking but found after a few short years that my home reeked of linseed oil and turpentine, as did my clothing. That led to the switch to watercolors. The switch was not an easy one to make as I had never taken a course in the medium.  It differs vastly from oils. I find watercolors to be a more creative medium that has a mind of its own and you must cooperate with them and often accept that things will happen that alter your original idea, making it a creative venture, and most often better.

Recently I have made a concerted effort to rely more on the unique qualities of this medium to continue to express myself with watercolor landscapes. I begin with a limited color palette, add water and allow the paint to flow and mix on it’s own.  I maintain control of this process by where I place the water and also tilting the board to control the flow, direction and mix of color.  The final product is a landscape that adds to the viewer’s interaction with the painting.

Artwork by Ed Levine can always be seen in:

Skaneateles, NY at SKANEATELES ARTISANS or in Canandaigua, NY at the PAT RINI ROHRER GALLERY.

This summer Ed’s work has been and will continue to be displayed extensively at the Skaneateles Artisans Gallery at 3 Fennell Street in the Old Stone Mill Building in historic Skaneateles NY.  The gallery houses a high quality of work in a variety of mediums. Nestled on the shores of Skaneateles Lake (one of the cleanest lakes in the country), the village of Skaneateles is the place to experience the beauty, luxury, and hospitality of the Finger Lakes.

You can also view Ed’s artwork at The Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery at 71 Main Street in Canandaigua, NY. This beautifully refurbished 1850’s building, housing wonderfully intriguing gallery spaces downstairs with open to the public storage spaces that house more of each individual artist’s work not presently hanging. Upstairs is a newly renovated space for larger works with its own name of North End Gallery.  Canandaigua is on the north end of the Canandaigua Lake. The town is historic and scenic with a variety of locally owned shops, galleries and restaurants, and places to stay.

Ed Levine

Born in Albany New York, Ed Levine received his art education at the State University of New York, College at New Paltz, and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.  Among the artists with whom he studied was George Wexler a well-known painter in the Hudson River school tradition, Arnold Singer and Zevi Blum, in Ithaca, NY, both master printers and graphic artists.

Ed has lived in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York with his wife Marilyn and two children, (now grown) for his entire adult life. First teaching art at the secondary level and creating a two-year Advanced Placement Program that was instrumental in gaining many talented students admittance to prestigious art schools.   Secondly, after a few years, Ed began developing a career as a painter first doing juried shows in the Northeast and then finding galleries to sell his work.  Presently Ed’s work can be seen in the picturesque village of Skaneateles, New York, at the Skaneateles Artisans Gallery and at the Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery in Canandaigua, New York.

Ed’s work has been characterized primarily by his use of saturated colors in a simple but effective composition.  He says that he is always striving to portray the feeling and emotion of a scene without too much detail, or clutter.  Knowing when to stop is often the most important quality for painters.
